The Training Ground: Atlanta's Gridiron vs. Gigabits
by Rishi Patel, Peijie Liu, Zerun Wang & Manasseh Yeboah.
Atlanta has a very strong competitive scene, having very successful traditional sports teams, like the Falcons and Hawks. But now it is beginning to become the central hub for a lot of esports in the south. But the rise of esports brought the question up as to what makes a sport a "real" sport. Can an athlete who is sweating it out on the turf be classified as the same as someone who plays games? In this episode on the Training Ground, we take away the jerseys and gamer tags, explore the raw mechanics of such high-level competition, and challenge the idea that only physical people can be athletes.
Joining the podcast, we have an Athlete and esports player, who played in the DreamHack Atlanta. With the help of our two hosts, this podcast explores spanning physical wear-and-tear, intense film study, and post-game recovery, the guests discover surprising parallels in their training. Listeners will get an inside look at how navigating a collapsing pocket and clutching a 1v3 final round demand the same mental discipline, high-stakes preparation, and physiological adrenaline rushes.
Topics we discussed:
- The APM (Actions Per Minute) metric and asymmetrical muscle strain in esports.
- Similarities in how they decompress
- Traditional football install days vs. Esports Video On Demand (VOD) reviews.
- The sensory environments of collegiate stadiums vs. the Georgia World Congress Center during DreamHack.
- Physiological responses to high-pressure moments (heart rate and adrenaline).
